Named after the Martinican Creole expression meaning “the skin color that escapes the status of a slave,” Lapo Chapé explores the complex intersections of race, colorism, and mixed heritage. Through a series of intimate testimonies, the documentary uncovers how the legacies of slavery and colonialism continue to influence social hierarchies, self-perception, and collective identity. Participants reflect on experiences shaped by skin color and inherited narratives, revealing the often invisible forces that persist across generations. By connecting personal stories to broader historical realities, the film offers a nuanced examination of belonging, identity, and the enduring impact of the past on contemporary society.

Mélissandre Monatus is a filmmaker, writer, and cultural researcher whose work explores identity, mixed heritage, race, and collective memory. She began her creative career in amateur cinema as an actress, co-screenwriter, and co-director while pursuing scientific studies in France. Drawing from her own mixed Martinican and French background, she has long examined representations of Black identity and racial stereotypes, notably through her research on the image of Black people in French society. Her award-winning documentary Lapo Chapé investigates skin color, mixed heritage, and transgenerational trauma, earning the Dikalo Award for Best Short Documentary at the 2024 Festival International Panafricain de Cannes.
