In the beginning of the last century, Madeira Island was known as Brandy Island.
The extreme consumption of this drink became a social problem.

Thirty four (34) sugar-cane mills were closed in nineteen twenty seven (1927), production decayed and its trade was controlled.
Alternatively, the people began to produce their own brandy from wine dregs, activity harshly punished by the authorities, which started to be made deceitfully.
An illegal conveyance covering twenty five kilometres (25 km) began from North to South of the Island, with the carriage of fifty litters (50 L) on the back.
Despite several arrests, this activity lasted about fifty years for tracks that became known as ... The Smuggling Route.
