Translation is the history of an entire downtrodden generation, persecuted and subjugated under the military regime of Augusto Pinochet throughout the dictatorship in Chile. Thousands of women and men were detained and subsequently disappeared, their whereabouts unknown to this day. Martín, a film student does a documentary memory exercise, embarking a search through archives and testimonies to find out what happened to his mother, and thus fulfill a promise he made to his grandmother.

Through archival footage, Martín's voiceover, and experimental work with images, Translation tells one of thousands of stories that, no matter how much time passes, the memory of a loved one will never fade.

The families' lives were cut short not only emotionally but also in terms of survival, as in most cases the detainees were parents and providers. Therefore, they had to deal with horror, fear, poverty and stigma.

For years, the families made long and unflagging efforts to search for their missing relative, attempting to locate them through seemingly legitimate government agencies but finding no answers, clinging to the hope that they were detained and that they would eventually return home.
